  • Notes
    • From the 1851 Census (HO107 Piece 2495 Folio 228 Page 18) Ellis, 6, was with his parents John, 55, a River Boatman, born Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales, and Mary, 45, born Llanbrynmair, at Duck Street, Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales. With him were his siblings Susan(nah), 17, a House Servant, Ellen(or), 14, a Scholar, and Lewis, 10, a Scholar, all born in Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales.

From the 1861 Census (RG9 Piece 4537 Folio 27 Page 1) there was an unmarried Ordinary Seaman by the name of Ellis Williams, 17, from Aberdovey, Merionethshire, Wales aboard the 98 Ton Schooner John Wesley employed in the Coasting trade that was in Holyhead (Anglesey) Harbour. Also aboard the vessel were John Rees, married, 36, Master from Pennal Merionethshire, Edward Bell, married, 28, Mate, from Machynlleth Montgomeryshire, Hugh Jones, married, 30, A B Seaman, from Liverpool Lancashire, William Hughes, unmarried, 24, A B Seaman, from Newborough Anglesey, and Robert Arnold, unmarried, 17, Ordinary Seaman, from Machynlleth Montgomeryshire.

From the 1891 Wales Census (RG12 Piece 4396 Folio 64 Page 63) there was an Ellis Williams, married, 46, Ship's Rigger from Aberdovey, Cardigan (!), at 26 Frederica Street, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. He was lodging with Thomas Wells, 53, Boilermaker from Johnston, Scotland, and his wife Sarah, 63, from Radcliffe, London. Also lodging there were Esther Powell, widow, 76, from Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and Joseph Powell, 38, Labourer from Cardiff, Glamorganshire.

According to Lewis Lloyd in "A Real Little Seaport"; By May 1876, aged 32, Ellis Williams was Mate (£4 10s. a month) of the schooner 'Maglona'. He joined the 'Maglona' at Porthmadog 8/5/1876 and was discharged at Middlesborough 26/6/1876, having served previously aboard the 'Liffey Maid'. He then joined the brigantine 'Xanthus' as Boatswain (£4 4s. a month) for a voyage from Newport, Monmouth, 18/9/1876. The balance of his wages was then £3 1s. 1d. Aged '34' in 1880, he appears to have served as A.B. (£3 a month) aboard the schooner 'Sarah Davies'. So his career seems to have been in decline by about 1880. This contrasts with his earlier career when, aged 22, he was Mate of the schooner 'Jane Owens' in 1866, though he did re-join the vessel as Boatswain (£4 a month) later in that year and was discharged at London 18/8/1866. So, some 10 years later, aged 32, he was Mate (£4 10s. a month) of the schooner 'Maglona' in May 1876, an advance of just 10s. a month on his wages - and that was not all. The reasons for his declining fortunes warrant further investigation.
