      Prior to the marriage William wrote from 15 George Street, Pontypool to Ellen (Eleanor) when she was working in the hospital.
      Before he joined up he lived at 10 Queen Street, Pontypool, Mons where he worked for the post office.

      Military service:
      He joined up by pretending to be older than he was.
      Chaplain's letter RGS Karachi.
      A letter dated 2 July 1910 from the chaplain tells that 'gunner Penny' was helping as church orderly during the previous 18 months at the Royal Gunnery School (76th Company RGS) on Manora Island, Karachi then India. The Royal Indian Navy were trained at Manora Island. Pakistan became independent 14 Aug 1947.
      William was away at the time when Dorothy was born (9 Oct 1914).
      He found lodgings (for 2 years) in Scotland for his wife Eleanor and daughter Dorothy (about 2 years old at the time) when he was stationed in Scotland. He was a sergeant major.
